Do you keep your yarn stash manageable? My routine is every few crochet projects I finish, I try to use up a much left over yarn I can. Some “go-to” stash buster projects ideas for me are:
- Beanies. Even in warmer weather I like to stock up on beanies of all sizes for my kiddos, or family and friends. Or make a bunch of newborn size to add to baby shower gifts.
- Granny Squares. I can ALWAYS come up with something to make out of grannies.
- Scrappy Baby Blankets. The best yarns in my stash go toward baby blankets to gift for baby showers or to donate.
- Throw Pillows. Yes, I’m one of those who doesn’t seem to have enough throw pillows.
But… this year my stash somehow has exceeded the space I have for yarn storage and I’m not quite sure how I got here 🙂 (We all know exactly how I got here.) Using up craft materials
I have a few 10×10-inch dark stained wood boards from Michael’s that I had left over from old projects and I was trying to create a cute way to put yarn on it. (I am not affiliated with Michael’s) You can get these at Walmart too, I’ve seen wood boards of different sizes. Meanwhile, I coincidentally was looking at crochet flower ideas and saw this adorable Crochet Puff Flower tutorial by Hooked by Robin – find the crochet tutorial here.
Choosing from the yarn stash
Any weight of yarn would look great, but I chose from my worsted stash. Texture and variety add so much interest, so adding DK and bulky yarns would look amazing too. I chose 5 different colors of yarn from my stash. Personally, I didn’t want 2 of the same color flower too close to each other, and 5 seemed to be enough to accomplish that. I chose navy blue, pink, yellow, teal, and gray. There was no rhyme or reason for a color scheme, but I do tend to like contrast in things and I think it turned out fabulous!
Crochet a bunch of puff flowers and glue them on!
I started making these puff flowers at random by color until I filled the 10×10-inch space of the board. There were 31 flowers total. Then I assembled them on the board in the order I wanted them to be in and then used my handy-dandy hot glue gun to glue them onto the board. I recommend starting with the middle flowers and working your way out toward the edge. As I glued them on, I made sure to sort of “squish” them so they were super close together. I was okay with some small openings between the flowers, but I didn’t want gaping holes throughout. I also was okay with a tiny bit of the edges exposed to get the look of the wood background.
And there you have it! Another yarn buster idea that’s a little different from your scrappy blankets or granny square projects. You can use up any size yarn and whatever color you like! Crocheting these little flowers and gluing them onto the board didn’t take too much time. You can put it on your wall or use it as shelf decor in your craft room 🙂 Enjoy!
